the tax you pay for using your car on the road is not road tax seemingly as it's not spent on the road, but just for being allowed to use it (in a motor vehicle) - which sounds like a road tax to me, it must be said

Road Tax was abolished in 1937.

I use my car on the road without paying a tax for doing so, so what you (we) are paying can't be road tax.

I thought we had established that duty was tax, no ?

It is indeed a tax, and its usually a tax you can avoid by not doing a particular activity (eg not driving, not going on holiday, etc). However it is not a tax for the roads which is where people get it wrong.

How silly people can be ? Roads cannot pay tax, must be the same folk who exclaim " Golly gosh my Vehicle Exercise Duty is due again ! "

Mrs V just texted me with....

X and Y have just had a go at work about cyclist's not paying Road Tax

I Texted back..... "Tell them no one pays road tax it doesn't go on the roads just in to general tax and its based on emmisions so neither do hybrid drivers or in fact Foreign lorries........ (2 texts)

She texted back.... "Oh no I just replied...... At least I'm not overweight, do exercise and not drive everywhere in a car......
