yes, usual commute is 3 miles each way unless the weather is nice then it gets a lot longer ^_^ , has been known to be 20 mile circular route . Was in central london for a few weeks at back end of 2010 and did it on the MTB ( no road bike then) . will sort your legs out good and proper.

To be honest, it all depends on the surfaces you will be riding on for your commute. If it is predominantly track/trail then you should be good as you are. If mainly road, some hybrid road type tyres may be better suited to make the first few journeys easier! Or full on Road Tyres for full road riding. Also if riding road, may be an idea to lock your suspension if you have that option.

Hutchinson Top Slick2's - about as close to a road tyre as you'll get. Not particularly puncture proof, but fast, light and only 1.2" wide. Don't take them off road though !

Looks wrong, but it was fast....

My commute is 30 miles roundtrip. I use my GT Avalanche hardtail with hybrid tires 3 days a week, year round. It is a mix of 70% trail to 30% road so I lock-out the front suspension for the road sections. It's worth using decent puncture-resistant tires, nothing worse than punctures on a regular basis. I have Schwalbe Marathon+ and they have been brilliant!
