I want to replace the tyres on an old GT Aggressor to turn it into a mainly commuter oriented bike that is still capable of soft roading.

What tyres would you recommend?

I've read somewhere that Schwalbe Land Cruisers are good, they're certainly a good price. Would you recommend these? Or something else?

Thanks

I am going to order some Schwalbe City Jets tomorrow for my MTB, can't wait to get rid of the knobblies and they will hopefully make my journey that little bit easier too !

I like the look and price of those. Trouble is I'd still like to be able to use the bike on simple off-tarmac paths, nothing too muddy but needing a bit of grip that the Land Cruisers would seem to supply.

Actually, I'm now wavering.

Looking at the Schwalbe Marathon and Big Apple. More expensive than the Land Cruisers but look like they may do a better job for me.

Too much choice

+1

i currently have panaracer passelas hanging up on the garage wall with brown sidewalls. perfectly good tyres with tourguard but goodness me they are ugly with a brown sidewall. may just stick them on and possibly go for good old marathon pluses when these wear out

Yup. The City Jets are pants on mud. Saggy grey pants at that. With stains. They are as good as you'd expect slick tyres to be on mud.

It's better to walk.

I put Schwalbe Marathon's on my MTB and have no complaints. I've also since used it "off-road" - on estate tracks to cycle into the Cairngorms before going hillwalking. Tyres were fine on these sort of stoney, dirt surfaces.

I have had the Marathons on my mtb. They are very good tyres on tarmac roads and have been perfectly well behaved on the grit, mud and potholes surface of the canal towpath, and on the muddy bits at the top of the Tarka Trail and on the Strawberry line path.

I love my maxxis hookworm's for commuting. Not the lightest tyre, but corners well, is almost bullet proof and doesn't mind going off road (as long as it's dry)
