Marathon and Marathon Plus tyres are fantastic if you suffer from a lot of punctures, the cycle lane I use is next to the A45 and it gets all of the rubbish from the road including glass etc. from accidents, I have used them on my mountain bike, commuter and recumbent trike and they are fantastic. If you don't need the protection then they are expensive and heavier than the alternatives.

Very good, much better than the worn knobbly it replaced, as you have probably seen you get a fairly solid centre band with knobbly bits at the side.

So on the straight you are pretty much on a slick.

I pump mine up to about 45PSI

Thanks Graham. I think I've pretty much decided on them, especially at that price.

I still can't decide. I'm the epitome of prevarication at the moment.

I like the look and the image of the Big Apples - I just prefer the fatter tyre look on an MTB. Going to a 1.5 or even a 1.75 would look a bit silly on an MTB IMHO

Am I going to pay a significant drag penalty by using a fat semi-slick compared, say a 1.9 land cruiser or similar? The only reason I'm changing from the current knobblies is to gain an improvement in rolling resistance so I don't want to go over to the Big Apples if there's to be no significant gain.

Or am I better off sticking with my original choice of the Land Cruisers?

Thoughts anyone?

Always late to the party, me. I've got Spesh Armadillo Nimbus 1.5 tyres on my MTB and in 3 years of occasional use (probably 2000 miles or so) have never had a puncture. They seems to be grippy too, I don't every recall a slippery moment with them.
They do make the bike look like a "normal" bike just with very small/shrunken wheels, so I know what you mean about the fatter tyre look. I like 'em though. Enough that I am thinking of putting the road bike equivalent on the road bike.

no your not. what most people seem to forget is that a wider tyre will have a larger side wall and therefore a larger diameter and a larger circumference. this will travel further for each revolution of the wheel (that's why you have to re-set your computer) and cancel out any drag penalty that may or may not exist.

you will also get huge benefits in comfort with a wider tyre.

I'm using 700c x 40 michelin citys' on my hybrid, i challenge you to keep up  http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=26232

I've been running Land Cruisers since last summer and think they are pretty good for the money. Fast and quiet and no p*nctures so far... having said that I just plumped for some BAs to spur me on with getting back in the saddle after a prolonged xmas break - just need to fit them.

26x2.0 at £15 a pop from Amazon... the price has gone up now. They came standard on my folder and impressed so it was only a matter of time before I kitted out the mtb/commuter.
