I go progressivly slower when tailgated, until they have to pass me.

That's responsible and sure to prevent any escalation of the situation.

Good idea............not.

I was driving along a 3 lane urban motorway yesterday in a 50mph average speed section, in the inside lane, cruise control set on 53 [sat nav tells me I'm doing 50 exactly]. I'd been followed for some time by a Citroen Picasso behind, slowly catching up but still about 100 metres back in the middle lane. I was approaching a fork ahead with the inside lane splitting off so indicated to move into the centre lane when the white lane marker line changed in advance of the junction. The car behind, presumably on seeing me indicating, accelerated rapidly but refused to pull into the outside lane and kept in the centre lane and blaring his horn. There was no-one else around at all and he'd had to really put his foot down to catch me up... He kept on driving at 70+ but then on leaving the 50mph limit he slowed back down again and continued his pootle.

Why are some people like this? Do they drive round deliberately trying to provoke aggression?

Yes, they do.

They are complete idiots and there are quite a few of them. This appears to be their one moment where they feel empowered, presumably as they have little in real life.

Loosers.

I dont speed up or slow down. I find that if I just maintain my course, it iritates them but I know that they wont go into me (unless they do and then I call the police).

What about moving over closer to the side to allow them to overtake safely.

Just a crazy thought!

which ones ?

My wife has a E250estate and averages 51mpg the technical data promised 54mpg on the combined but as expected was a little over optimistic. Looking at the technical data for the most economical M Class (4x4 and over a ton heavier) and the combined mpg quoted is 32mpg (so probably nearer 30 in reality)

At the end of the day any real 4x4 is are always going to be heavier due to the stronger chassis needed and that extra weight is always going to burn up a lot more fuel.

It is such a shame that modern advances in engine and car design is being used to provide bigger and heavier vehicles. OK it is remarkable how economical these cars are becoming, take my wife's ridiculous mode of transport, 200+ bhp in a car weighing nearly 2 tons on long journeys can get nearly 60mpg. If this technology had been used to make a car of 1980s power and dimensions, (70bhp and less than a ton) we would be probably getting in excess of a 100 to the gallon.

I used to get 40+ mpg out of my ML (4x4) while my daughters Fiesta only averages 30 mpg.

The difference being my mileage is done on the motorway whhilst hers is around town.

Yesterday I was tailgated by one for miles along the A1079 because I was observing the speed limit (it is a notoriously dangerous road).

I don't like being tailgated at all but when it's a 4x4 it just seems to be adding to the bullying effect. Probably why they are less popular than many vehicles.

perhaps they was drafting to up their mpg ?
