See Reiver's previous remark about the race track and the highway....

If it's not safe to overtake a car travelling in a central position in its lane, then it's not safe to overtake, fullstop. What difference is moving to the left a foot or so going to make?

I am perhaps more familiar with the difference as I have experience of both.

On many roads simply by moving to the left there is adequate room to make the manouvre without even having to cross the centre line. Obviously if there is only 12 inches to move it will make no difference at all. I had assumed that was obvious.

Sorry if I wasnt clear.

I dunno where all these roads are round your way that are wide enough for one car to overtake another without crossing the centre line - assuming you're not talking about dual carriageways. If a car can't cross the centre line when overtaking, I don't want them trying!

Anyway, I'm in the 'impatient gits can wait' camp.

I'm more of a "if I can avoid inconviniencing someone for very little effort I will" kind of guy

If I get tailgated I'll move over when safe to do so and let them pass, it's no big deal. Besides, if that's how they drive sooner or later they'll get pulled by the cops or end up wrapped round a tree somewhere.

Trouble is they sometimes take innocent people with them when they wrap themselves around trees.

I'd love to know where these single carriageways are that are wide enough to overtake without crossing the white line are as well. The only ones I can think of are little bits of the A17 near Sutton Bridge, the A5 near Oswestry, and the A590 between Barrow and Ulverston. Anyone think of anymore?

11 to 12 feet is the "normal" width of a single carriageway.

A Ford fiesta is about 5' 6" a Ford Focus 5' 10".

So the Fiesta moves over leaving about a one foot gap between him and the verge/kerb/ditch. The Focus overtakes leaving a two foot gap between both cars, that still puts the Focus in the other lane.

Or would you have the Fiesta right in the ditch, and the Focus only leaving six inches between them as he passes at approx 60mph?

What would happen if the Focus was the one being overtaken, and a wider vehicle such as a Transit van was doing the overtaking?

In either case the car behind would just have to hang back and wait for a long enough straight section of clear road to overtake.

what if.....you were driving a fiat 500 1" from the kerb and another fiat 500 overtook you leaving a 6" gap?

There would still be 18 inches for a thin person to ride past on a moped and still not cross the centre line.

I think you get the jist!
