I am lying prone on the sofa after lunch with my parents. Do parents even stop trying to feed you up ?

It's the cost that puts me off, unless you can do taster sessions locally?

If you join a club tuition is normally free, or you could do a one day course BCU star one it's about £50-£60 and it is a fun day, but you will learns loads. Kayaks can be picked up quite cheaply from ebay in the winter, it all depends on what you would like to do river of sea, you could start with a sit on top kayak do to both.
I started with a sit on top and now doing mainly sea kayaking now, I even made a sail for my sit on top see here
