Weapon of choice for schoolteachers, back in the day. Flexible and durable. Some of our teachers were as expert with those as a walking staff in the hands of a Shaolin Monk.
Brass rules are also used by Blacksmiths (now retired) as they don't discolour when measuring hot steel

Our metalwork teacher was an old Polish guy called Mr Zider(I'm not sure of the exact spelling, but that's how it was pronounced), and his favourite punishment was to say, "I'll give you the ruler," followed by the steel ruler accross your hand.

Thing was that he didn't hit very hard so some people would deliberately attempt to get it, and just prior to him uttering the usual threat would say, "go on sir, give me the ruler," and then hold their hand out with a big grin.

Took a day off work fancied a bit of me time. SWMBO left for work as usual at about 8 and I surfaced about 9. Pottered downstairs to find a list of jobs sellotaped to the front of the cereal box. Ho-Hum
