@Hill Wimp knows all about that. She helped me ease the guilt of buying a zoom lens for my camera when she was here I last month. I repaid the compliment with her binoculars.

There should be no guilt at all when buying a zoom lens, although I used to carry many prime lenses with me, back in the film day.

I think it is still free too, unlike busses (they charge) although it's been over 5yrs since I took mine on one.

Amtrak would have an apoplectic fit if I tried to take my dogs within a block of the railroad station.

There are trade-offs, though. I live on the high speed line and, if i order tickets online 2 weeks in advance, I can do a round-trip to Chicago, 150 miles away, for about $20.00. Cheaper than parking for the car.

Buses round here don't charge for dogs.

They used to charge 'half fare' (Same as a child) here in Leicester

Snipe loves going on the train, especially if her owner lets her sleep in the aisle. Her owner doesn't, but that doesn't stop her from trying.

Edit: no charge on busses or trains, though Snipe's less keen on the bus as it's too rattly. She likes to travel in comfort.

National Express etc don't allow dogs, other than guide dogs. But then they don't allow bikes either, which says a lot.

A conductor once made the announcement that we were on the whatever time train with whatever the stops were, with this many carriages and that many passengers ... and one yellow Labrador! I spent the entire journey saying "yes, this is the dog," "yes, she's friendly and would love a fuss," and "oops, sorry about that, she seems to be moulting everywhere. Snipe, what have I told you about people wearing black?"!

I have a 20 mile ride home in the rain tonight (which I knew about and have planned for). But I'd forgotten that I intended changing the saddle on the Raleigh Foldaway 7 spd bike that @Hill Wimp gave me. Even with padded shorts I think it's going to be rather

@Hill Wimp - What phone have you got? Mine is now nine years old, and it might be time for an upgrade.

A very small camera that takes good photos, and can make the occasional phone call seems a good idea to me.
