I've just brought a turbo trainer, after 5 years without training I'm starting again, I had a voucher from work when I finished there and this meant I got it for £85, I also went through Quidco so there will be some cash back to come, so all I need to do is set some targets and work out some routines.

I found a speaking and programmable interval training app on my phone useful. You could program, for example, a timer for 10 mins easy spin, then 3 sprints of 30 seconds with a three minute recovery time between them and back to easy spin then a spoken reminder would interrupt the music playing to instigate each new part of the session with a 3,2,1 countdown and then the exercise.
I had different sessions programmed, loads of music and a window to look out of. It helps to have regular workouts with targets defined and tracked for progress, distance, cadence or indicated speed (I know this isn't real distance/speed but it is at least a repeatable metric.) I wasn't in to heart rate tracking but you could do that too.
When I couldn't stand unaided after my stroke it was an enormous help to get my body back working.

What app is that then?

When I had an Android it was this one.
I've just downloaded another one for my Windows Phone to try as I intend to start again later today.

I've got a turbo and my major challenge was staying on it for more than 30 minutes. That sounds easier in theory than it is in practice.

I used a turbo for years, I brought my first one about 1992-93, and had a winter training routine, training for the spring reliability trials, but eventually I wasn't getting anything out of it, it had become just routine, so I stopped, I started again after my close encounter with Angina but after a few years I stopped again.

I've always used a heart monitor in the past, and having had heart problems, angina, in the past I'll have to use one again.
