In Denmark there is not a pub culture as there is/was in the UK when I was young. During the week the pubs are very quiet with a few die hard drinkers. In the evenings at the weekend they are used mainly by the youngsters but they dont turn up at the pub at 7pm like we used to do. They drink at each others houses and go to the pub at midnight and then go clubbing.
Then there is the krø, which is a pub that does food. I go to the krø quite often for a meal and a beer. But the last time I was in a 'pub' was about 6 years ago to watch a football match.
We are fortunate that we can just nip over the border to get beer but we drink very little alcohol and I think that is the same for most Danes.
Its not just a cost thing. It is certainly a culture thing. People are invited to friends houses a lot more than they are in the UK rather than going to the pub.
When Denmark is ever mentioned the cost of beer comes up. But it really does not effect the majority of Danes. They buy it in the supermarkets and that is comparable to the UK.
