At my nearest station, there is no ticket office. The protocol was that you could board the train without a ticket, but you had to make yourself known to the conductor (?) when he walked past your seat.

At the next nearest station, there is only a small ticket office. This frequently had a long queue. So to avoid missing a train, you could board without a ticket, and explain to the conductor about the queue and why you had not got a ticket.

If I do not wish to purchase a ticket on line and do not know how to do that with my mobile phone, can I still board without a ticket?

Warm and occasionally sunny here chez Casa Reynard.

Did not sleep well. Brain wouldn't switch off as I'd been working on a poem and it kept offering solutions to an issue that was bugging me. Eventually had to give up, get up and write them down. Was still wide awake at half five this morning as a result. As a result, I feel bloody grumpy. I did putter about in the garden though.

Anyways, it's time for luncheon.

Train tickets can be a mystery sometimes!

a bit annoyed today. don't know why I scheduled a haircut a month ago for tonight. this is keeping me close to home when I would rather be free & exploring. it's rare to get free days off from work & today feels like a waste!

also waiting to assist Son w/ the car transfer & saying goodbye to my late Father's car. come on ppl let's get his over with! I have places to go! it's summer & I'm free!

also, my sunburn has heeled & I'm ready for more!!!

Had a lovely luncheon of two slices of wholemeal toast, one with sliced Newmarket sausage & mustard, the other with Burrata cheese, plus a banana, a flat peach and two :cuppa:

While I was making the tea for luncheon, the phone went - rare, that.

Picked up, Was an automated call that my card had been charged with a WTF amount of money, and could I please press 1 to verify etc. I hung up. At no stage did the call mention the name of my bank.

A quick check after luncheon shows that what's on my account tallies with what I've spent.

I notice some rumours that all ticket offices are to close. In bigger stations you are supposed to use a machine but no idea about small ones. Probably online only.

I get those calls fairly often. Phone goes back down almost immediately.

Yes you can get on the train if it's no ticket machine. If it's has one then you need to get Promise to Pay notice from the machine. Which allows you to get on a train and pay the 1st chance you get. Either on the train or a ticket office (if it's got one) when you get off.
With out you may get fined for trying to fare dodge.

Frustrating day.
Missed getting on a ferry as standby by about 10 minutes.
Next one which I was booked on did not appear and I noticed the lifeboat heading out.
Transpires there was an emergency somewhere and they were tasked to assist by the coastguard until the lifeboat arrived. This meant a delay of about an hour.
Nice tho' that the vehicle marshalling blokes all call me by name. No idea where they got this info from.
As I am booked on for being near the lift I do not join the normal queue so get called when appropriate." Right Mr OW on you go."
Boat was crowded with most seats taken so stood outside mostly in the very fresh air. Judging by the speed we took the corner out of Oban bay they were obviously trying to make up lost time.
On Mull got behind four vehicles heading north. One local van peeled off at Aros Bridge leaving three in front. The one in front of me was making valiant attempts to persuade to ones in front to let us past but not forceful enough tho' eventually one gave way. The one in front of both of us resisted all attempts and meandered on at 35 mph. AAARGH
Got home and started to unload and the rain came on.
