I’ve noticed two things today, 1 you always join the longest queue and 2 Poinsettias just last one week, still we have a nice new expensive pot added to our collection.

Poinsettias are very picky and need a very careful handling. They come for Mexico so not exactly our Christmas weather. The 1st big rule is never buy from a supermarket. They just see them a seasonal cash maker, also never one that outside like some shops do. By the time they have moved all over the place and left on shelves. The damage will have been done long before you got it. When you do buy one always get it wrapped or cover it over. Before you take to the car or home. That short bit of cold is more than enough to do it in.
The hardest thing is to find a UK grown one , we only have one left the supermarkets have like so many others have bleed them dry.
They are expense to grow last time I checked with the trade anything under £7 meant selling at a loss.

When I was transport manager at Sainsburys we had hourly temperature checks on stand trailers for poinsettias (+12 to +15 iirc) & -22 for frozen turkeys.. God help the person in charge if anything went wrong 😂
Mind you, as soon as the plants were delivered, they were put right by the front doors so they got alternately freezing & hot (and dead)

And absolutely lovely they were too.

We have just done the same it wasn't too bad but bad enough.
I seemed to get lucky with my timing as they opened a couple of extra tills just as I got into the queue to pay, so shopping was thankfully a quick in and out. I'm not going anywhere near the main shopping areas or town centre on Wednesday.

200 mile round trip to a Screwfix in Nottingham with a stick on shower handset holder completed along with collecting dad for Christmas. Painful 50 mph section of the A1(M) from/to Bramham for seemingly far too long in both directions
Return was all too often stationary on the M18 approach to the A1 with slow spells thereafter all the way to the 3 lane stretch commencing pass Ferrybridge. Maybe should have stayed on the M1 but that just seems too much a long way round
Tile cleaned with meths so hoping the sticky part stays stuck.

It's been a dull, grey and miserable day here chez Casa Reynard, with the occasional bit of drizzle.

Did not sleep particularly well on account of being overtired. So was up earlier than usual to get ahead. All the usual chores were done, and then I made a big pot of barszcz (beetroot soup).

Lovely luncheon of some crusty bloomer, the last of the wensleydale with apricot, a mini pork pie and a couple of clementines.

Then I spent some time rejigging the fridges and freezer to maximise space, and all the veg I bought has been taken out of the packaging and is now stored in cardboard trays / mesh bags.

That done, I made a farmhouse pate, which has been jazzed up with orange and cranberries to make it festive. Will be way better than anything bought.

A quick supper of beetroot soup and sausage rolls has been had.

Am now watching Arsenal v Palace. I still have some kitchen stuff to do later, but it's nothing overly major.
