I'm finding that after 15 - 20 miles cycling I get a pronounced ache in both my triceps and the upper part of my pecs. I get it either using drops or flat bars although it develops faster with drops. I've had both types of bar heightened to reduce pain in my hands. Would some sort of additional exercise (say press-ups) reduce this discomfort?

You may be pitched just a bit too far forward over the bars and supporting too much torso weight on your arms. Also your elbows may be locked-out and taking a lot of road shocks through your shoulder area.
Regarding positioning, you might want to move your seat back a bit, all explained here:

Thanks FF. I had thought that by raising the front (to reduce hand pain) it would also ease the problem I've described.

No worries, Let us know how you get on with your adjustments. Don't be afraid to experiment, small movements in saddle position can have a big impact. measure and record each position as you go.
