What causes these ? I get them pulling my big toe or second toe along the bottom of my foot towards the heel. Also the 'outside' muscle on my calf. Especially when I wake up in the morning.

I went to the doctor regarding cramp while cycling and swimming (she said not to do both at the same time....boom-tish). She asked if I'd looked-up cramp omn the internet...I said I had but there was not much concrete evidence as to the cause...she said she new and that they really didn't know the cause either!

Salts, hydration, minerals, temperature, oxygenation all seem to play some part though.

    Useful reply eh?

The foot pain is Plantar fasciitis again. Also known as heel spurs. The calf cramp is also causing the foot pain.

Try a good "Salute to the Sun" routine in the morning. Failing that, keep stretching your calf muscles through out the day as much as possible.

Definately salt and hydration. Stretching the muscle helps when it happens
