About Last.fm

Last.fm is a music recommendation service. You use Last.fm by signing up and downloading The Scrobbler, which helps you discover more music based on the songs you play.

What’s Scrobbling?

A scrobble is a little note The Scrobbler sends to Last.fm to let us know what song you’re playing.
Scrobbling helps us tell you what songs you play most often, which songs you like the most, how much you’ve played an artist over a certain amount of time, which of your friends have similar tastes… all kinds of stuff. By focusing on the music you already play we can help you discover more music.

What you get

Scrobbles mean we can deliver personalised recommendations for every single Last.fm listener, every single day. We compare what you play to the scrobbles of millions of listeners around the world, meaning your recommendations are the result of more than 43 billion scrobbles and counting.
There’s plenty more you can do with Last.fm too. By getting involved in our community you can tag tracks, join discussions, learn what’s hot and find new ways of uncovering the secrets of your listening history.

streaming radio via the internet to your pc/laptop etc. you tell it who you like to listen to and after a couple of tracks it will start to play similar artists that you may/may not like...

Fair do's. The nearest I get to that is using a couple of my FM transmitters to blast my music all over radios 1 and 2 hereabouts

Thank you Giovanni, but I'm still non the wiser, how does it know what I am listening to in my car?
For example if you would stream music from your iOS/Android/whatever device. Of course this won't work with traditional FM radios since they don't broadcast any metadata (I listen to Radio 4 only.).

Why? What for? Why don't they mind their own feckin business?
concept is to introduce similar artists to you... you sign up for that. Does work - I have found a couple of new artists that way who I really like, but don't tend to use it much anymore - takes too much bandwidth and I have seen small companies run into problems because of staff using it all the time (music has to be played to ensure privacy of clients in physio sessions etc).

Interesting idea, but I don't have the spare bandwidth, plus with over 40 years of music on my ipodery over 13,000 tunes, I think I'll just stick to that and listen to the radio, which is free (at point of delivery at least).
