I've snapped a chain twice and broken two pedals, broken rear wheel and crashed twice. Chain link tool could be useful and a mobile phone is only really any good if the person who is going to pick you up is available.

I was lucky in that 1 x crash, 1 x broken pedal, 1 x chain and broken wheel happened at the weekend when my wife was at home. The other times I walked home, the longest being two hours.

So ideally take enough cash for a taxi and a mobile phone, so you can put the bike in the back and you inside and get chauffered home.

Spare socks. A small towel ( or facecloth ), two plastic bags and two elastic bands.

When it's a 'show stopper', I hate walking home in wet socks.
