After nearly 300 odo miles of commuting my "trusty" old stead gave way last week.

On a 20mph slight up hill my front axle snapped on the way home from work, because I was out of the saddle I was launched over the bars breaking my collarbone, opposite arm and tearing up my knees and hands on the road. It's taken a week to get back onto laptop as both arms are in slings, humph.

So my new aims are fix myself, fix bike (or replace if its getting that weak) then the hardest of all convince wife that cycling is not all that bad!

Thanks to everyone who stopped, whoever they were, the ambulance and the A&E staff at Treliske.

Also need to come up with a way to thank the Mrs for looking after 99% of what I need (I can wipe my own before you ask) as well as looking after our toddler and 12 week old baby all at once- suggestions welcome!?

I reckon you need a different bike, one on which it is, I would hazard, almost impossible to break an arm should an axle fail.... see my Avatar picture. There are better machines out there of course, some of which have 3 wheels and are even harder to damage yourself whilst riding. I seem to recall that the good chaps at ICE come from Kernow somewhere - pop in and visit

Cracking a solo.

Sounds very painful and more than a little frustrating, get well soon! However, only 300 miles and your front axle failed, or am I being really stupid?

Sorry not a typo- just my poor writing skills.

The bike was second hand 12 years ago when I got it and haven't ridden in a few years. Wheeled it out of the garage a couple of months ago to start bike commuting and have covered 300 miles since then!

Annoying thing was a the rear wheel was buckled when I started a few months back so my LBS replaced it, wish I asked them to do the front too now. :banghead:
