Well my six year old takes a calculator to bed and says he wants to be a Chartered Accountant when he's older.

I have tried to discourage him. Told him not to bother unless he got a training contract with one of the top six.

When I was that age, I wanted to be a lorry driver. Which I now am. You never know what might happen: after all, someone's got to be part of the next generation of pro cyclists.
the mermaid and binman thing might be more difficult.

My daughter wants to be a binman during the day and a mermaid in the evening. It's not going to work is it?

Do the merpeople not have their own refuse collection service?
Solve both issues in one go. You could try writing to Triton?

Careful with that, she might get confused along the way and aspire to becoming a barmaid or something.

Sit down with him and get him just cycling for fun -be realistic about the work involved but hopefully still support his dreams - it may be a pipe dream but the encouragement now even if it's something he doesn't take up will do his self esteem and confidence wonders. First step would be getting out on the bike and then seeing if he wants to join a club to race but make sure everytime it is what he wants to do cause the last thing he needs as kid is to do something that feels like a chore. One of the most important things about athletes is the ability to believe you can do something well. Over time you'll be able to tell and he will hopefully if he has a natural fitness and ability. Just be honest and supportive and hopefully he'll remember that when he's older

you'll be surprised about how kids soak up info like a sponge from loads of sources.

He might just be trying to impress you with bike related knowledge...my post still stands though-treat him as an adult and talk it through to see if he's serious but concentrate on the fun factor for now

Never mind humouring him, you now owe it to him to live the dream, make his aspirations a reality. You need to sign up with top pros, devize a training regime which will occupy his every waking hour, absorb every bit of spare cash in the household, and ensure that unless he is absolutely at the top of his game every time he gets on the bike he should be ridiculed and berated.

Probably.

Uncle Mort, you owe it to your daughter to disavow her of any form of fantasy. Now. Start with the Santa thing, you only have a few weeks left.
