The answer is your point 3. if you don't strive to keep your speed up, then it will naturally fall off. Like most people say, 'who really cares'? I work with a bunch of Stravanauts so it's obviously vital to us :hyper:

If you rode to the top of a mountain and then stopped to admire the view and photograph plants and flowers that only grow that high and then freewheeled all the way back down what things would effect your average speed and would that be as relevant as what you saw and what you photographed?
What are your priorities when you ride, speed could be one but then so could photography.

Speed and distance have become largely irrelevant to me. I just ride, sometimes fast(ish), sometimes slow. It's great to no longer be a slave to a silly little box telling me how fast I'm going.

I don't ever try to go fast. I just naturally get faster and faster even when I try to take it easy. I'm the same walking. My Garmin is more to track my rides and I do like the stats. I do like to look at my maximum speed after a descent just to see if it was as fast as it felt (usually not).
