My beautiful bike is dead

hackbike 6,the end came at Aldgate on the ride in.

hackbike 8 followed soon after and I rode this back from Waterloo like this.

Bike felt weird soon after Southwark Bridge as I remember and on inspection at Waterloo I found this.

That looks v.v. nasty! It's always sad when a fundamental failure like this happens. Hope you get somewhere with your 'claim'.

I passed a guy once who was riding one of those full sus mtb's with the incomplete downtube under the seat - top tube had cracked, presumably from the weight of his body stressing the tube whenever he went over a bump. Guy was very upset, and the bike looked quite new.

Catastrophic failure after 2.5 years. I have a nagging doubt the warranty on a De Rosa is a pathetic 2 years. Not looking forward to calling Sigma in the morning, just hope I'm wrong.

If its anything to compare with joebe...my Bianchi failed after about two and a half years...they replaced it replaced no problem.

I'd always assumed frames were warrantied for 5 years. Is it an alloy frame ?

Even if it's out of warranty, I shall still make a nuisance of myself, as the bike has never taken a tumble. It looks like the fracture started where the gear cable bracket joins the top of the tube. I'll post some photos tomorrow as soon as I remember the password to my flickr account.

joebe, even out of warranty you have the right to goods that are fit for purpose. I don't know what the legislation is and hopefully someone will come along in a minute with it, but I believe that if you would normally expect a bike to last for more than 2.5 years and you then can claim that is was not fit for purpose, that they have to replace it. In my experiences bike frames normally last more than 2.5 years!!

Obviously try the softly softly approach first. If that doesn't work....

Ouch. HB8 does look a bit terminal. HB6 tho'...that's just a broken dropout isn't it? Can't that be fixed relatively quick & easily?

I spoke to Sigma this morning who contacted Jim Walker (the importer) who have asked for more info.

They have sent the photos on to Jim Walker, so we'll see what happens.

I agree softly softly for now, and then may be crank it up a bit, I must admit the 'fit for purpose' line did cross my mind.

I too would expect a £1,500 frame and forks to last a little longer.

BTW, the frame is alloy with carbon stays.

I am more than a bit interested as I have just bought the Merak on offer in there! As you can imagine your post has somewhat deflated me.

TRJ977, it is/was a beautiful bike and I've not heard any other similar horror stories, so don't think the worst. I just hope Sigma/Jim Walker/De Rosa do the decent thing now without it decending into a battle of wills.

BTW how much was your on offer bike/frame, if you don't mind me asking? I didn't see the Merak in the last JW catalogue so I wonder if they're shifting leftover stock now.

I bought the one that was in Sigma's window. It's a 2006 with Chorus group and was up for £1500. Which looked good to me.

How are the cable guides attached? odd that it has failed at that point. All Catrike frames have a lifetime warranty for the original owner.
