Courtesy of the very excellent http://www.bikehike.co.uk i've mapped my route to work. Its not gonna mean much to anyone else, i admit, but here it is: http://www.bikehike.co.uk/mapview.php?id=23085.

There's a bloody big hill at the start that i've, in time, grown to love (funnily enough ). Near the top is a little plaque to Edvard Munch, painter of 'The Scream'.

Only ride it 2 or 3 days a week tbh cos my job is quite physical. Past 6 weeks my back has been knackered (sciatica) so, the times i've been to work, i've used the local 'citybikes' for the 10 mins to the train station.

Really enjoy the route. About 1/3 off-road so use a mtb and best time is 1hr 2m 17s for the 14/15 miles. (Just got a Jake The Snake so hope to bring that down when me flamin back improves!)

Cant help thinking tho' that you London cyclists are either seriously hard-core or just b***** masochists! But there again, i'm intending on riding to work on snow/ice in -10/-15C. Horses for courses, innit?!

I just wished google maps worked in Oslo, that looks like it could be a very picturesque ride!!

All I can say is…Good Luck in the winter!!!....not sure where I would rather be TBH, Oslo in minus a zillion degrees or London with all the traffic and nastyness.

Hmm, I'll tell you in the spring!

Went to Oslo by sea many years ago, fantastic coming through the fjords. Beautiful city.

I take it Citybikes are some enlightened form of communal bicycle that would be abused or stolen if located outside the Nordics, ie here.

Good luck to you too.

I'll try to get around to putting up some photos when the conditions get interesting. Dont think there'll be as much snow as last year tho - the off-road sections of this route were not cycleable, this year, until May.

@upsidedown:

The Citybike (BySykkel) scheme is really useful imo. Costs about eight pound for the year. You register and get a chipped card in the post. Swipe the card at any of the bike-stations, take a bike and away you go.

There were a few bikes nicked at the start of the scheme but they dont get stolen anymore. Often leave mine outside the shop, cafe, etc. They're not attractive to thieving scumbags cos they weigh half a ton, look distinctive and, therefore, not possible to sell on. As to drunken teenagers smashing them up? - that doesnt happen here (or very rarely).

On the downside - they're no good off-road

This is my non-rubbish weather route to work. There's a loop at the end which isnt true but the the mapper seems to have a mind of its own

Hi nelson

Took me a few attempts to get it right. Found that by toggling the 'follow road' option on the main screen, and using the 'travel mode' options in the 'options' window, ie. walking or driving, helps a lot.

Looks a nice route. Good hill up from the Tyne.

That route (via Siggerud) avoids all the off-road sections and looks to be the best winter alternative, imo. Takk.

You live hereabouts, Andy?
