My deliberate RLJ - opinions.

Is RLJ'ing on the FIRST stop line acceptable practice?

  • It's sensible. Just make sure no traffic cop is following first.

Get your head out of your bottom for once.

Crikey mate, was that really necessary?

You don't think I have a point that a forum like this attracts cyclists who are keen on cycling, who want to improve their knowledge, and those who cycle a lot? As opposed to the randoms we see out there who don't care a hoot beyond riding for transport.

Grow up, you have no greater right to the road than anyone else, if you don't know how to ride in traffic, get a bus pass!

+97 I agree if you never sussed.xx(

I have to confess to going through the odd RL if it is a pedestrian crossing where the pedestrian has clearly crossed. It may be wrong but you need to rebel occasionally;)xx(

I'd just take primary along there. As you say, it's only a short stretch.

As an alternative, I've recently been using the cycle route along Shoreham St > Asline Rd > Fieldhead Rd > Stavely Rd > Saxon Rd and found it rather pleasant. Probably not one for super lightweight road tyres though.

The Sheaf Valley route is all right. The 'problem' for some cyclists is crossing continuous lines of traffic on Wolsley St. I don't find it a problem but people have even asked for toucan crossings to be flatly refused.

The OP junction is a bad one as I am using the 2nd lane and you sometimes get dopey drivers hurtling towards you at 30mph caught out by the changing lane direction. A similar thing happens in the two lanes where people nearly go into traffic queueing angrily expecting them to 'move'.

Did this junction earlier outlined in the OP today and nearly got taken out by some aggressive guy in a pick up on Broadfield Road.

Perhaps I read more into a reply than intended, perhaps not. Either way it's not worth the aggro

I think HJ's opinion was perfectly valid too. Not even very harsh, and not radically different from anyone else in the anti-RLJing camp.

Being very familiar with that junction I don't see the point in RLJing but I have a lot of sympathy with difficulties with it and we hadn't even got round to discussing when they fool about with the sequences and a lot of motons RLJ . Like I said, nearly got polished off today doing the same route up Broadfield Road.

I didn't like to complicate it too much by adding the cars in the second lane turning left when the arrows are pointing right, and cutting over to the left when they see approaching traffic in the middle lane.

I don't take that route often, in fact last night was the first for a while, and think the better solution all things considered is a left turn before the junction around Guernsey Road. If only they tought drivers what box junctions were, pulling out at the other end would be much simpler
