When my NHS dentist went bust I found it impossible to get on another list unless I went private. My present dentist drives a Range Rover and a Maserati - what is it with dentists and cars? - and I'm charged £45 for the hygienist to clean me within an inch of my life. Ok, it's a lot more than £17.50 but it's still a lot less than a tank of diesel for my Astra.

I go to my dentist every 3 months for a clean and scale, and charges me over 50 quid, he said I've got deep pockets. I said I must have to pay your fee!

What's up with you folk and this hygienist talk? Does nobody brush twice a day like they're supposed to?

My NHS dentist charges £17.50 for a check up and will do a 'quick' scale and polish in with that, if he considers it is required, but always recommends I have a thorough scale and polish done by the hygienist at an additional £17.50 Either way, it definitely comes under Band 1, but two Band 1's in my case!

Is there a regulator you could ask the question of?

In the old days I cleaned my teeth regularly but still had the scale and polish every so often. Investing in a good electric toothbrush three years ago has changed that, now my dentist compliments me on how clean my teeth are at every visit.

Yes, and use alcohol-free mouthwash, and dental floss and disclosing tablets and an electric toothbrush ..... but the ultrasonic probe reaches parts unavailable to me.

Blimey is this what private dentistry costs
I've been going to the Dental Hospital in Manchester since 1976,
so I've never had to pay, dread to think what my treatment would have cost,
3 gold crowns,1 platinum and porcelain crown, numerous fillings,3 extractions under
general anaesthetic, root canal surgery etc etc.

Crooks. The other half was quoted she needed a load of work, she went for a second opinion elsewhere and was told there was nothing needed doing, a third opinion suggested some but not as much as the first suggested, just who do you believe? I'd not been to the dentist in over 20 years and decided last year to go for a clean, nothing needed just a check and light clean £30. I'm a firm believer if it aint broke don't mess with it. Remember most of what they tell you is all about making £'s, the UK dental industry is worth somewhere in the region of £5 billion. As part of my job I come into daily contact with dentists, trust me I hear stuff that would make you think twice about handing over money next time you are told you need xyz doing...

There's only one band 1 though. It should cover all the work done as part of that treatment so if you need a check up and a polish, that's £17.50. If you need a checkup and a filling, that's £48. If you need a checkup and 5 fillings that's still £48.

[QUOTE 2234965, member: 1314"]I posted this a few weeks back:

UK Dentists

I've avoided them for a couple of years. However, at the beginning of this year, my gums started bleeding, I got really bad halitosis and hints from my team members:

"Been to the dentist, yet?"

So I went for a couple of quotes - both said I needed 2 fillings replaced, a bridge, anti-biotics, clean and polish. Otherwise, one said, I would lose a couple of teeth within a year. They both quoted between £800-£1000.

Now - I took the list of works, and went to a dentist in a small village in India a few days ago, and asked them for a quote. Father and son outfit. Now - get this. They inspected my teeth, looked at the list of works and instead of saying "We'll charge you £150 or whatever - as they could easily have done - they said:

"You don't need any of that work. You just need a clean and polish. It'll cost you £3 per session, and you'll need 2 sessions."

After the first session - a clean - my gums stopped bleeding, my bad breath went and the teeth feel marvellous. I asked them to whiten my teeth which they refused:

"We don't do whitening, as it's only temporary and your colour is fine. However, we can recommend x dental services who charge £90."

What on earth were the London dentists doing, quoting me £800 plus. I rather think they were doing me - they're a bunch of bandits

Interesting stuff. I've written to my dentist and asked him to clarify some points. I expect it will eventually result in me being removed from his books rather than getting me anywhere but I am interested to see where it leads me.

My brother would be horrified to read these stories.

He qualified a few years back, and spent a fair amount of time in the Dental Hospital and a local hospital post qualifying to gain extra experience. He then went into practice, but he sticks to the NHS rules, and never ever recommends additional rip off treatment. He has even done work in Africa, so called holiday, he paid to go, which meant three weeks field work and a few days off.

Keeping your teeth clean goes a long way, and I can recommend the electric tooth brushes, my brother buys us the top of the range ones for birthdays.... He gets them trade price.
