- Somewhere wet & hilly in NW England.
NB: This is not my photograph, just a product of some Googling.
1970ish and at the grand old age of 14 one of these Carlton Tens turned up as a surprise birthday present.
Cost the princely sum of £37 6d (not sure if I have written that correctly).
Mine didn't have the little 'guards - I think they were extras and my Mum couldn't afford them.
I spent many hours on this bike over the next few years both touring and attempting a number of 10 mile road races in the junior section of Gravesend Cycling Club (my hometown) although I was next to useless in the races.
The big feature for me was 10 gears. A real wow! My friends were riding 5 gear bikes and they all wanted a go on my Ten.
'Trainers' were not quite 'here' yet so I rode this bike wearing flimsy black plimsols - sheer class.
It eventually made way to a Raliegh Professional which was my dream bike back then as it had Campag' gears.
Bikes have changed a bit over the years!
