How much does it cost to Oldham?
And of course there's always OP ceramic. My Rear's been on there for years without problems. pricey but very very good.

Ah, that's the kind of thing!

I am responsible for 3 bikes subject to rim wear (my MTB has disk brakes so that doesn't suffer from the problem) so it would be a handy instrument to own - thanks.

Assuming that I buy one of those devices and so can measure the remaining rim thickness - how thick does a rim need to be to be safe?

My best bike has Open Pros and my commuting bikes have Rigda Chrina

They are pretty similar rims, different ERD, the Chrina is slightly heavier and wears slower. The Open Pro is welded at the seam

Chrina cost approx £18 and Open Pro £40

The best bike might switch to an Exal LX17 at the front though

I'm going to do the Protons first because they are lighter and in better condition.

Thanks for the offer, but I have a 'resident' mechanic at the moment who keeps saying the same things as you about what a simple job it is so I'll get him to do them some time he calls round for a cuppa after work.

I think the problem was that I left it too long and had pitted the cones, so I need to get hold of some new ones. I found a company selling Campagnolo spares last night so I'll order some when my next affiliate payment comes through.

Speaking of coming over ... what happened to our weekday rides - is your summer break over now? Are you planning to join us for Season of Mists on October 2nd, or possibly a ride to Holmfirth on Friday, September 30th if you are free?

I think mine definitely have some wear on them. I wouldn't say that I'm a (complete) wimp, but descending without braking on some of the hills round here isn't an option! It's a question of just how much wear. Perhaps I'll get some vernier callipers on them and measure how much metal is left there.

i have just been so ill this year, currently suffering from sinusitit which sucks. 2011 has been the worst year for minor illness' i have ever had. i get over 1 get riding and then get summat else. career change and being exposed to poorly people might be the issue.

i just need to mtfu!!

I've got one of those but don't really trust it (they're a bit basic). It shows my rim thickness to be anywhere between 1.0mm and 1.3mm seemingly depending on what I've eaten for breakfast, or what colour underpants I'm wearing. Probably best to splash out on a digital vernier.

ISTR the min recommended thickness for OPs is 1.0mm, and they go BANG! at around 0.7mm.

No you don't! Go to your docs and ask for a blood test (or go to a drop-in NHS blood test place) just in case.

I've had a lot of mini-colds this year too, but I've put it down to drinking too much coffee (and shedloads of stress). I remember reading some crackpot theory that lots of caffeine depletes zinc, leading to a fall-off in testosterone production and susceptibility to colds. Or something.

cheers, already have done my well man clinic this year, everything ok. when i started being a student nurse, the uni warned us we might get minor illness' for the first year or so until our immunity builds up.

Oh, potsy said on Sunday that you weren't feeling well. I hope your immune system starts to rev up soon then!

I don't think that illness is something to get tough with; you'd only end up making yourself worse in the long run.

i was joking guys, plus needed to get it in before potsy did.

i'm learning not to be too eager to get back to placements when ill. i've been self employed for so long i can't help it. so i've been going back when still run down and getting double whammied.

the rim will get worn by brake being applied surely, not age and not even miles

My OPs last me about a year of 22 miles a day of London commute, with my 15st7lb and pannier, handbuilt but a ding or a buckle normally does for them, this year I did wear out the front rim

a rebuilt wheel every year doesn't seem onerous to me, and I'm tight

and surely there's a wear line on an Open Pro rim?

Yes, I wondered if swapping to a better brake pad (Swisstop green - one that actually slows me down in the wet

) is a possible cause of premature wear. I was quoting miles as an indicator of age/wear.

I can't see a wear line on the OP rim, so either :
a I haven't reached it
b it isn't there !

I have read that Mavic switched their production to Poland and the quality seems to have gone down around the same time ....

Still unsure what to get next

... some seem great, then there are reports of it being almost impossible to put a tyre on them

.

DRC ST17 anyone ?

Exal LX17 ?

Rigida Chrina ?

My rear CXP 33 did the same recently. I wear out rear rims in just over 12 months, fronts last two years. Now that I've mastered re-building wheels, it will just be the cost of rims now.
