i have tried rebooting but still have the same problem.

the modem has its own power supply which i normally switch off whenever i switch off the pc.

i'll try and 'disable' ZoneAlarm like linfordLB says in case that's whats causing the problem.

cheers

Your modem should have a light that goes green, for instance, when it has completed its connection to your ISP. If it stays red, then the problem is your ISP, if it goes green then the problem is with you, probably your firewall software (ZoneAlarm).

It also might be worth checking to see if there are any yellow error signs in the device manager list. by going to Control panel, System, then clicking on the device manager button.

Good thinking Charlotte! Do you think we should be charging a call out fee for this ad hoc tech support?

I have his bank details now so just tell me your hourly rate, i'll add an extortionate call out fee and pay it direct into your account for you (it's okay, I know your bank details ). :becool:

Could do with a lump hammer for my sister-in-law's pc - all went up the wall last week - Talk Talk, so they (mum and two teenage kids) all fiddled with stuff - PC will no longer talk with the router - my laptop happily talks to it though.

Check the lights as suggested - does your modem have a diagnostic program - youy could also run that - will tell you if it's connected properly.

Oh and don't go with AOL....rubbish

i'm having the same problem. weird thing is, i can go through my broadband and get on to my works portal and get onto the internet that way (but doesn't allow me to view some stuff which is really annoying) so i know it's not my computer or wiring, but when i try to access the internet through my own broadband... nothing.

tried rebooting (which usually works) and resetting the box but still nothing.

that's about all i know about I.T.

Are the family in the North-West, like you are?...i tried phoning TalkTalk last night about my internet problem and there was a recorded message saying there are currently 'issues' [hate that word!] being experienced for our customers in the north-west...we are currently dealing with it bla bla bla..."

Well I've just looked up the location of her registered branch using the bank details I have stored for her and it says somewhere in the Midlands. Maybe the problem is more widespread than we feared?
