I bought my bike at the beginning of November and started cycling again after not doing so for several years. I've struggled with hills and distance but I've gradually been building it up with the aim of doing a mini tour at some point next year.

I popped down to the shops today to get a Yorkie and a Sprite and somehow ended up doing a 40-mile round trip in the rain. I've just got back and the bikes filthy, I'm covered in mud and I forgot to get the sodding Yorkie. I know the distance might not seem like much to a lot of people but 5 weeks ago I was struggling to do ten miles and walking up hills rather than cycling. Thank God for spontaneous rides.

Brilliant! I love this post.

^_^

(PS 40 miles is a long way to pretty much all of us)
(PPS that's 64km. A metric half century. And it's two-thirds of the way to a metric ton. Which in turn is two thirds of the way to an imperial ton near enough).

I did that once. I said to Mrs Accy that i was just nipping to the shop and i'd only be a while. The shop was shut so i went further and further, eventually doing 46 miles. On a mountain bike as well! I'd struggle to do 10 miles on a mountain bike now.

Well done, 40 miles is certainly not to be sniffed at. I did the exact same, maybe took me a bit longer to get the confidence to try a decent ride but I got there in the end. I find it's difficult to compare a 10 or 15 each way commute to a 50 mile run on a Sunday. I reckon we just pace ourselves naturally, as I've sometimes felt like a burst mattress 5 miles into a commute, but fresh as paint after a 50 mile flat run. Keep it going, your only going to get faster.

Excellent work, but surely there is a nearer shop......
The trick to getting the distance in is to take it a little easy. I tend to knacker myself out by holding too high a speed (by my low standard) and as such often top out at 40 with the occasional 50.
Where did you go, I was near your way today.
