After some years of having the same avatar I decided to have a change

<<

I will not tell you anything about the image (some story to it), but I am really interested to know if you know who it is.

I am not sure if it is recognisable (especially here in a cut down 80x80 image).

It is a portrait of I.K.B, painted by a relative or quite possibly yourself. You may also be related to him too.

Reminds me of IKB - is it?

Me too!

Spot on Summerdays and also Just Jim for the story.

It is aiming to be a portrait of IKB. I painted it and was interested to see how recognisable it was especially when degraded down to an avatar quality image.

if you want a look.

I have been a big fan of IKB for years and have been dabbling at painting since being credit crunched a while back.
What I find amazing is that today we have access to hundreds or even thousands of images of even the most minor celeb, but a great figure such as Brunel only has about a dozen images out there (about six photos and six portraits).
I had the thought that there may be a bit of a vacuum in that area and that I may be able to paint historic figures to fill this need.
If you were to write a book on say Brunel you would be stuck with the same old images to put on it.
So that is the story so far.
I am working on a Jane Austen portrait next.

Definitely reminded me of him even in Avatar size. However since I'm living in Bristol he is one of those people very associated with the city - and a year or two ago they gave away little books on him and his life in graphic novel style - which reminds me I must get it out for my youngest now he can read a bit better. I'm a bit of a fan of his.

Apart from being a workaholic of the nth degree he must have had a tremendous personality as well. The way he controlled the workforce when lifting the spans on the Tamar Bridge really impressed me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He's one of my personal heros - He went right ahead and did things about which most other engineers of the time said, "you can't do that, it's impossible!"

It's people like him I think about when I'm up against "it" (whatever "it" happens to be at the time), and faced with a seemily mammoth and difficult task. I remember the Nike slogan and tell myself, "Quit moaning and just f**king do it!!!".
