Sounds great, and there's a 4 stroke version now I understand.
I agree with their missing a trick. So much cooler than 'modern' style twist and go plastic scooters. I'm not sure though about having an automatic, I guess it would increase sales, but from my perspective having 'Real' gears would be an extra coolness factor!

My pal whilst out riding today was asking whether it would be suitable for his 25 mile commute from Abingdon to Reading which he now drives at about 45mpg or £2500 fule alone a year. To be honest I reckoned it too slow on a rolling, busy single carriageway route for daily commuting. What do you reckon, he's interested in reducing his fuel bill, maybe a mid-size motorcycle.

Sorry guys for the OT stuff, I guess it's about saving fuel...

Sorry, I didn't make it clear, mine is the 4 stroke version. It's easily fast enough for that commute, it can cruise at 50/55mph, I'd liken the performance to the old PX200 2 stroke.

Your pal will be able to pay for the scooter, tax and his insurance for the cost of one annual commute and have an asset!

I believe a 250cc version is due in the UK anytime now and that will make it much more than a commuter.

My favourite motorcycling route as well as Ballater - Tomintoul - Grantown - Aviemore

I once was on this route on my SV650 and saw what I later found out to be members of the Tayside CTC battling against serious winds cycling up to the Lecht.

Respect to them, I hope to do that myself one day.

Well a lot of replies, and some interesting and diverse points of view; as would be expected on a cycling forum!

To those who say petrol is cheap. Yes I agree that the oil companies do a magnificent job in finding oil, getting it out of the ground, transporting it to a refinery, turning it into the finished product and then getting it to the consumer; all for about 45 pence per litre. If only Coca Cola, mineral water producers, brewers etc. could all do that. My gripe lies with the taxation policy, especially the fact that we pay 20% VAT on the DUTY!!

Public transport. Hmmmmm. Probably a good option if you live in a major populated area, but even where I live which is only about 20 miles (as the crow flies) from Glasgow, it is poor. Dirty, cold, infrequent trains. Try getting to work on a Sunday morning (as I have to do):- First train leaves here at 0953, getting to Glasgow at 1120. It goes a very indirect route. Oh, and it costs £8.50 for an OFF PEAK return. Hardly an incentive to leave the car at home.

As for the statistics about motoring becoming cheaper in real terms over the years. I've never really trusted statistics as I used to work in a job where they were shamelessly manipulated to suit the occassion. All I know is that my income has been static for at least 6 years now (in fact we took a 5% wage CUT last year) while the cost of fuel has rocketed. As has insurance, and to a lesser extent, road tax (sorry, vehicle excise duty). As those are my main motoring expenses, I fail to see how they can say the cost has reduced in real terms.

With regards to the Honda CG125; further research has made me realise that using it for the purpose that I intend (commuting on main trunk routes) will not return anything like 100 mpg. So I think I will be using the current motorbike, and trying to use the throttle a little more gently. I can probably expect 50 to 60 mpg from it, depending on wind direction.

At the end of the day, if commuting that distance is not profitable in the long term, you have to make plans to move home or job. A harsh reality. I spent 11 years of my life commuting that far and it is costly.

In the short term - I've got an FZ6 (effectively the same bike) and I just got 10000 miles out of both my tyres. Maybe you could save a bit by accelerating a bit smoother ? I have touring tyres not soft compound specials.

Unfortunately the local work situation is pretty much non existent. I like the town I live in however, and would not be prepared to move away for the sake of a job that pays £8 per hour, such as the one I am in just now. Bottom line is; when it becomes unprofitable, I stop working. That day might not be far away. I am in a slightly fortunate position of having a pension from a previous employment which would be enough to scrape by on. But I would be contributing ZERO to the Chancellor.

PS... 10k miles from a back tyre on a Fazer? That's quite an achievement. You sure no-one changed it for you at 5k without you noticing ;)?
