My old man has passed on his old Galaxy Ace to me, and i canna get it to connect to my PC.

Plugging in the USB only charges it... there's no USB connection icon on the phone, so i can't see the PC from the phone. I can't see the phone via My Computer either. I've installed Samsung Kies, which does nothing in spite of the fact I've Trouble Shot the USB connection, done the jigery pokery for the Wi-Fi connection and still nothing (although i can connect to the interweb from the phone via my wi-fi).

I've been through the settings, the USB tethering bit says 'no usb device connected' when there's a USB lead between the phone and the PC... could it be a 'charge only' cable (just a guess, i doubt such a thing exists).

Any ideas or pointers to blonde proof user guide?

figured it might be something like that... kind of takes the U out of USB if Samsung use a specific one (although it's only 4 wires, how 'specific' can it be?)... which is why I set up my wi-fi router, and still no connection.

Did you install the software before plugging it in? Sometimes that can cause issues as the computer may try and install what it thinks are the right drivers and balls it up.

Sounds like its set to charge only.

I love my Sony MP3 player, but the SonicStage software is as disastrous as everyone says. Crashes literally every time you transfer anything. Every time.

Kies doesn't even load up for me anymore....it's a nightmare.

Agreed... as a lifelong computing fan I've seen my share of terrible software, but Kies pretty much takes the biscuit!

What version of windows in on the PC? XP or before require manual installation of the drivers

Different version of Android required you to connect in different ways. Some older versions required you to go to: Settings>Network Connections>USB Utilities>Connect to PC, before plugging the phone in and then select connect to PC on your phone.

Kies is hateful. In my android days once you plugged the phone it it offered you various options for charge, data transfer, see it as plug in storage and put a little trident-y looking icon on the top toolbar-wirh the signal & battery info. If that is there you should be able to tap it and open up the options box to set it to sync rather than just charge.

If not then maybe your old dad got shut of it for a reason
