Coming from Northampton I’ve always pronounced it “Nen”

Well Wikipedia has it under Nene so I will stick with that.

I am sure to some it's just a river

Often places are not pronounced as they are spelt. Basford (Nottingham) is pronounced Baseford while to the south east of the city Gotham is definitely not as per Batman but Goat am. The story of the mad men of Gotham did however generate an idea for a cartoon strip...
