Vaguely surprised they allowed that, in the circumstances.

Indeed Brian, especially as a row of 18 terraced houses in Washford had their gardens and sheds badly damaged by fire from a stray spark from the West Somerset railway (about 3 miles down the line), August last year.

We and our neighbours have discussed this, and take some comfort that;

- Our rear boundary is some three feet higher than the farmers field between us and the track, with a brick retaining wall, our fence above.

- The crop has been harvested.

- We are a good 70 metres from the line, whereas the Washford gardens effectively abutted the line.

Hmm, I'm not normally a spoilsport, but I'd have thought that the fire service might 'take a view' if asked. The authorities here are very proactive in stopping risky activities here, with good reason.

My good lady is down with her folks in Shropshire just now, and sent me this as they've been complaining about the lack of rain ruining the lawn...

So, kindly, I responded with this shot from the end of our cul-de-sac, to remind them what the stuff (both rain and grass) looks like...

It’s no exaggeration to say we haven’t had any meaningful rain for 2 months.
It’s worrying, the grass will grow back but trees are starting to show signs of distress. And I do not know how any crops are growing.
And everything is just covered in dust.

It's not, of course, being ignored Brian:

Heritage Railway Response

  • Operational Restrictions: In response to extreme dry spells, high wildfire alerts, and dialogue with local authorities, lines like the West Somerset Railway and other UK heritage operators routinely monitor daily risk matrices. [1]
  • Mitigation Steps: Railways often substitute steam locomotives with diesel engines, enforce lower operational speeds, utilize modified spark arrestors, and deploy trackside fire patrols to eliminate avoidable risks. [1, 2]

I`am glad that they have it all under control. I read a few weeks back (can`t remember where) about a steam engine powered by coal is being modified (changed) to run diesel for this very reason. At great cost.
