Hi all,

Just a quick note to say thanks for the advice you guys gave me and to report that about 3 weeks back it was taking me 50mins to bike 5.5 miles on my giant mountain bike, and now after buying a new bike , 2 to 3 weeks later I have that time down to about 30mins...which believe it or not is slightly faster than the bus was when I used to catch that!

And can now pretty much maintain a stedy pace with out killing myself too, I'm also burning about 600 calories a day too, so I am now finally doing something other than sitting in an office chair all day

Cheers!

Satisfying isn't it?
These are exactly the reasons I enjoy my commute. At least as fast as the bus AND I am getting fresh air and some decent exercise all at the same time without taking extra time out of my day.

Well done, you're doing better than me. Takes me 35 minutes on a good day to do 5 miles - usually it's nearer 40!

And a bike will almost always beat a bus (In cities anyway).

Good work., and you've still got spring to look forward to.

Nothing better than starting in the winter.

Come March 12th sunset will be around 6 pm (where I am anyway), couple weeks later BST starts.

Right, before you go ANY further, measure your legs, and take photos. Then in a year's time you can do a before-and-after comparison. I keep looking at my legs wondering if they have always been like that, and its just that I notice them more now, or if cycling has made a difference. My wife says that there really has been a change - much more defined and muscles are much firmer.

Nice going Mushroom,

I can easily believe the faster than bus. On my old route before the bus was withdrawn (too many folk cycled, aye right ;)) the bus was timetabled for 21 mins (if there was congestion it'd be much longer) and I'd usually go up the hill to work in just over 15 minutes and down the hill in under 15 minutes. The replacement service takes nearly 1/2 hour at least (less direct).

Well done!!

I will probably be linking to this thread when there is a newb asking about how long it takes to get up to a decent speed or time and I reply with "Its slow to start, but keep at it and the rewards are there and improvements come quickly"
