A gentlemanly pootler, these days
- Location
- West Wickham
So, the route; out of West Wickham up Layhams Road/Skid Hill Lane/Chelsham Ct Rd/Washpond Lane, up Limpsfield Road, along Clarks Lane into Westerham, down London Road, up Westerham Hill to Pilgrims Lane, along Pilgrims to Sundridge Hill, up Sundridge Hill and along Sundridge Lane, left then right onto Grays Road, up to Hawleys Corner, right and down to Biggin Hill, turn onto Jail Lane, follow that then Single Street to Downe, then along from there via New Farm Land, left at the roundabout, down Church Hill and Jackass Lane, then Gates Green Road to Coney Hall, then up the hill for home.
First time out in cleats, so was expecting some fun, but not at all what we got.
First, my chain jammed on Layhams Road, forgot about the cleats and nearly came off.
Second, was blatting into Westerham at a rate of knots, came across a car unusually parked in the middle of the road; it was actually parked as its front end was wrapped around a lamppost, which it had bent wildly. Me and Le Blaireau got off, went and had a look... No occupants, airbags out. Looked as if someone may have lost it after a few G&T's last night, perhaps.
Third; got to Pilgrim's Lane to find the road closed; bollocks to that, we thought, as the alternative was riding up the rest of Westerham Hill. A couple of minutes later we found out why it was closed; a tipper lorry had dumped its entire content of building refuse all over the road. We had to get off and pick our way through lots of unwanted bathroom suites, etc.
Eventually got to Biggin Hill, and some temporary traffic lights; I stopped, Le Blaireau went on the pavement, naughty boy. Couldn't let the ride leader get away so went to follow, light change, got all out of kilter with the cleats and the car behind and nearly fell off again.
So, quite an adventure, really. The Vittoria Rubino Pro III's work very well though
