Well I think I deserve it anyway!

Rebuilt 3 bikes since the autumn, one for my son (1970s Galaxy), one for my mother (gas pipe Dawes), one for my wife (1940s BSA)
Had a lot of help from this forum....so thanks all.

Spent quite a bit on Ebay & with Ribble, Evans, SJS, CRC, Wiggle, WHS etc etc but managed to sneak in to the various orders enough bits & bobs to rebuild the entire drive train of my own "best bike" - a 531ST Galaxy from late 1980s.

Last component (cassette & chain) arrived yesterday - so finally able to fit new rear wheel and this afternoon it was on with the new lycra and out for a ride..... WAHOOOOOOOOOOO!

The new wheels (homebuilt Open Pros on 105 hubs) certainly make a BIG difference.
My usual 28 km circuit that used to take nearly 2 hours was completed in 1h 04 mins with a maximum recorded speed of 62 kph.
My previous max speed was around 49 kph, and I couldnt stop looking at the numbers on the computer I was so chuffed.

Of course kids have a way of taking you down a peg or two....
Pissed themselves laughing when they came home from school & saw 50 y.o. parent in lycra !

Good job Pete.

Of course, this thread is useless without pictures... (of the bikes, not you in Lycra).

Wipe the smiles from their faces by telling them your taking them to school on Monday....in full lycra gear ;)

And we need pics of the new family members.

Pic of my pride & joy here
The older Galaxy was pictured previously.
The BSA - still needs some paintwork attention, and new leather strap for the wicker basket, will post pics then!
The gaspipe Dawes, well it's round at my parents, but it's an old rustbucket, not worth a pic, although mechanically she is now back on song.

FFFF - TBH I've not put your shifters on yet, they are 7 speed, not 8, but they'll be fine in friction mode (running friction on original shifters at the moment)

Well done you!
I'm getting very tempted to build one myself now in a similar manner - bits cheap as possible from ebay, etc.

It's never quite as cheap as you plan, but you gotta "go for it"
Suggest you build your own wheels though..... I don't know why, but the satisfaction to be gained from that is out of all proportion with anything else. It's not at all difficult either. And the adrenaline buzz when you hit 60kph on your first outing on homebuilt wheels is something else:wahhey::evil:

Not sure about building wheels, but I'm sure I could think of something to do with the Alfine hub and On One Pompino frame & carbon fork that was delivered this afternoon

Sounds like a project!
If you not sure about wheels - worth downloading the wheelpro book.
Great step by step instructions & illlustrations. I built one front wheel from bits of unused/scrap wheels, and it was better than any factory built i've ever ridden, so I went straight to the Open Pro/105 build. Must admit my first attempt at the rear when seriously astray, but took it apart and started over, and followed the book more carefully second time.
