Mystery wheel nuts. Help please

Just bought a Dawes Sardar. It has these funny wheel nuts. I assumed they were hex sockets but no-5 sided recesses. Do I need a special tool? Any tips?

It looks like someone has put an Allen key skewer in there for security. An Allen key should undo them, allowing you to replace them with quick-release skewers if preferred.

These security nuts are a pain unless you have the tool. You might be able to use a bodge with a standard Allen key and a thin blade screwdriver. Looks like someone might have already tried that judging by your second pic. Then just junk them
