TPV is good for Spiral of Death - it releases erg and re-engages when you return to target power.

That’s nice but the power must be set too high for your actual true zones or you’re too fatigued to be on that current workout. Only ever had it once on suffer fest which was hard enough even when you weren’t been over ambitious.

That's good.

I have a feeling that I will end up with a TP subscription, but I will give MyWhoosh and Zwift a good test first.

I had definitely overestimated what I could do on the trainer yesterday! :okay:

I usually do about 500 W on one of the very short road ramps that I was trying to simulate so I thought that 15 seconds at 500 W would be okay on the turbo.

What really got to my legs was the abrupt transition from 150 W to 500 W. What I do IRL is to sprint up to 500 W over 100 m or so, reaching full power at the base of the ramp, and then try to hold it all the way up and onto the flat road above. I will replicate that ramp up when I edit the workout.

The next problem for me was putting 2 of those efforts in only 45 seconds apart. I will try increasing the separation by at least a minute to give myself more recovery time.

I'll leave the power levels alone and just start off with workout difficulty set to 80% next time. Once I can get through one of those sessions without failure I will set my target to 85% for the next one. Rinse and repeat: 90%, 95%, 100%, 105%... (?!!).

We have sunny spells here today so I will be hitting the roads rather than the turbo.

PS I decided in the end that I needed a rest so I made do with just a stroll to the shops. I might have a go at the 7.7 km Cragg Vale climb tomorrow and it would be better with fresh legs.

I just noticed something that confused me. It probably won't be of much interest to you though unless, like me, you manually edit MyWhoosh workout files...

<workout_file>
<workout>
<Warmup Duration="180" PowerLow="0.45" PowerHigh="0.75" pace="0" Cadence="85"/>
<SteadyState Duration="120" Power="0.75" pace="0" Cadence="85"/>
...
<SteadyState Duration="150" Power="0.75" pace="0" Cadence="85"/>
<Cooldown Duration="120" PowerLow="0.698" PowerHigh="0.446" pace="0" Cadence="85"/>
</workout>
It is odd that the low power value in the cooldown is higher than the high power value! I thought it would be a ramp down from higher power to lower power. It turns out that it is actually a ramp from the power at the lower (earlier) time to the power at the higher (later) time!

I have now created a new 45 minute workout with shorter, slightly easier intervals, and I have equalised the gaps between intervals. I'll try it out in a few days time after more road rides and a couple more zone 2 sessions on the turbo. I should be able to cope with the new workout starting with the reduced difficulty setting.

You can plus or minus the workout % as you go along. Feature been there for years. That’s why I don’t get folk doing the death spiral when you can knock it down if you’re not feeling it.

You obviously haven't tried doing it using an Apple TV remote control...! :okay:

It is an absolute pig to use when on the turbo. It is terrible even when not on the turbo but desperate when fighting the trainer.

I will set the % low before starting and not touch it again until I have finished. If all goes well, I will add a few % next time.

I am probably going to start using a game controller or maybe a Bluetooth keyboard instead of the remote.
