Having only taken up cycling in January, I set myself a challenge of doing 2 sportives this year to try and encourage myself to keep up the cycling but wasn't really sure I'd be able to build up from my original 7 mile route in time to do 2 long distance rides.

Fast forward 8 months and I completed my 3rd sportive last week with a 36 mile route on a Pedal for Parkinson's run and I have number 4 coming up in 2 weeks when I'm doing the 50 mile Highland Perthshire challenge.

I'm already looking to see if I can fit another one in this year and checking next years options so I make sure any holidays avoid local events that I don't need to travel far for. Guess this means I'm hooked on cycling:hyper::hyper:

Well done. The Highland Perthshire is probably my closest sportive but I always seem to be strapped for cash and can't really justify spending money to ride my bike on roads I can ride anytime. Looks a nice route though and I don't think there is too much climbing on the 50 mile one. Have fun.

No, you could do what I've done with others, find a sportive a that takes place near where you live, find the shortest journey into the route, and then do a lap. Take your own food/drink and enjoy a challenging route close to where you live.

Congratulations! I'll maybe see you on Saturday! (I'll be the one riding the absolutely manky Focus)

It's all open road. No-one stopping you from participating, you just wouldn't get timed or be eligible for food stops, but there's plenty of places to stop and refuel.

When you start doing longer rides the key is to make sure you eat! Atleast one piece of food every hour at the minimum. If you start feeling hungry, its too late!
