That happened to me too a couple of times, and it nearly put me off. But now they give you a large glass of water to drink immediately before the donation begins, which some research had shown would stop people feeling light-headed afterwards. I've given blood several times since they started doing this, and I've felt fine every time. Do go back and have another try!
Id kinda thought it might be due to having a couple of beers the evening before and not rehydrating after. They wouldnt let me leave dizzy and I was the last morning appointment so I ended up with like 8 nurses looking after me on their lunchbreak while i ate biscuits so it wasnt all bad  Ill see about going next time my dad does and giving it another chance.

I had a bad saturday morning donation about 12 years ago . all down to stupidity on the part of me and the volunteers who assured me it would be fine.

the last 12 yrs have been great tho

I've been giving blood for years (35+ donations). Always make sure I drink like a camel before the ride home, just in case I get light-headed or owt!

A friend and I donate and compete on who can fill the bag fastest. It's quite funny lying there, pumping your hand as fast as you can, raising your legs slightly in the hope it will help!

I won last time with a sub four minute time. ;)

Until Mad Cow Disease became apparent I used to give blood 4 times a year, but now they (Australian Red Cross) don't want it.

Because I have lived in the UK between 1980 and 1996 for a cumulative period of 6 months or more.

I could visit all sorts of places with exotic diseases and only have to abstain from donating for 12 months, but living in the UK between 1980 and 1996 is OUT. And they can't tell me when possible exposure to vCJD will no longer be a barrier to donating blood in Australia. But it's good to know that they take the integrity of the blood supply very seriously.

Have you sat in the new-style donor chairs? Went to give blood today.
Very comfortable.

Barnet,
I have been donating for 30+ years, my veins must be shot to pieces now. Sometimes they do struggle a bit to get the needle into a vein.
