During todays ride I, and a fair few cars had to stop for a bevy of swans crossing the road.

Thought it would be nice to hear some stories about random things we have all encountered on our travels!

Cycling along a rural road one morning and a cyclist was coming towards me. There was a deer running down the field at the side of the road which decided to jump the fence and cross the road........it ran right into the side of the cyclist. Gave him a fright and a dead leg. Was a bit surreal to watch.

I came across a Jay the other morning that I think had had a glancing blow from a car. Was just sat in the middle of the road looking bewildered. It let me stop and pick it up and put it into the side where it seemed to come to ok and hopped up into the branches. Couldn't hang around to make sure as I was on a corner.

One of my most amazing cycling experiences was while making my DVD. I was riding up to Pole Bank ready to film one of the Long Mynd sequences when a Red Kite took off from the heather and flew with me for probably about 1/4 of a mile before banking overhead and gliding away. It's one of those moments that I think will always stay with me.

Frustratingly I had 3 cameras attached to the bike at the time and none of them was ready to record.

On a dafter note, on a ride up to a hamlet called Oaks I'd got to about here when a squirrel darted out from the hedgerow, tried to run through my front wheel, headbutted a spoke and darted back the way it had come. I realise now that it could have been quite disasterous, but at the time I thought it really funny.

One time I found a Blue-tit in the middle of the road. It was very cold (Feb?) and it let me pick it up and move it to the side - but still didn't fly off. I ended up putting it in my pannier, taking it home, popping it in a cardboard box with some water and food, then going out. I left a note to my husband about what was in the box. Apparently when he came home an hour later it was moving around lots so he released it.

Quite a large part of my commute takes my via a riverside cycle path. There are all sorts of animals about, foxes, badgers, little mice (shrews?). The best thing I have seen is an owl, with a wingspan of about 1m tip to tip. Its huge. The first time I noticed it it flew at my from my right hand side, in the dark. All i saw was its large silouette against the bright night sky. I am planning to go back there with decent camera in hand to see if I can catch it in action.

Had a heron flying level with me, at same speed as me about 20 feet away to my left. Kept level for about 10 seconds before veering off. Magical moment.
