If I happen to be cycling at school drop off/pick up time I will go the long way round to avoid cycling past the school as the parents are just so unpredictable and reckless.
There is one mum who dropps off every morning for the breakfast club, just before 8, and she parks half on the pavement half on the yellow zig zag "do not park here" lines to avoid having to walk all the way across the road with her little cherubs.
I don't understand why some people think they have the right to park in clearly marked no parking areas.

I think they are broadly relatively safe, from a crash protection perspective.

But, then again, so are many smaller cars.

Depends on what you class 4 x 4's as too. A lot of the car brands now have the smaller versions of the big 4 x 4s

By the way, ever seen a new (post 2005) range rover driven without a personalised plate?

That sounds about right, isn't there a statistic that road deaths (non cyclist or pedestrian related) are at their lowest ever point. Cars are tremendously safe now, but that might contribute to a feeling of security in drivers that is unhelpful to anyone outside of the car.

I remember seeing Davina McCall on an episode of Top Gear. She said she drove some gargantuan wankertank like an X5 or a Q7 in order to protect her children. Obviously, any child she happened to hit in an accident was just collateral damage.

I don't just hate 4x4s because I'm a cyclist. I hate them as a driver. In the old days, you'd only have your long-range vision obstructed by a lorry or works van, which can't be helped, but now every other car is f-ing massive.

Utter selfishness too.

4 x 4's are great for your children, but blind and very dangerous to other's children.

@Andrew_culture I agree with 4 x 4's for their purpose, Land Rovers are amazing vehicles and I would love one if I had the need. My need for transportation is filled by a collection of single speeds and a Kia Picanto.

We really loved our series three, but couldn't justify the 12 gallons to the mile so bought a 900cc sooty van instead! Now that was proper fun!

It really is utter selfishness.

I cycle pass one private school and live near two. This seems to be the norm everywhere.

Riding home tonight past one of the posh schools an illegally parked yummy mummy pulled right out on me, I had to swerve to avoid her. Then 10 yds up the road another one pulls out without looking. Mummy number 1 slams on the anchors, and I very nearly go into the back of her...
So I swerved round the Audi 4x4 she was driving and banged the back of my gloved hand against the drivers window..... she jumped out of her skin! She may have stained the sumptuous upholstery.

I know it was silly, petty and totally out of order but I really enjoyed it! I will not apologise.

Number one rule of commuting. Avoid schools especially ones where the mums can afford 4x4s. I have lost count of the selfish/dangerous/stupid/aggressive behaviour of drivers outside schools. Not just mums and not just 4x4s.

There's a school at the end of my road and some of the dumb antics the parents get up to is really quite astonishing. I got knocked off by one woman pulling out without looking a few years back - I was fine as it was a low speed impact, but was sprawled on the road next to my bike. What happened next was truly unbelievable, instead of stopping, she proceeded to drive over my previously untouched rear wheel!

School entrances and supermarket car parks are my two least favourite places to negotiate on a bike- it's like they give away free lobotomies for drivers on approach!

I suspect that quite a few 4x4 drivers are such tools they couldn't even work out what 4x4 is.
