Yup, there are some busy roads round here that I'd struggle to cross with the kids if it wasn't for the refuges. The road network is an example of something where you can't please all of the people all of the time.

Loco, if you're not a relatively fit male of young-middle age, then it can be a lot harder to cross a road like that without numerous pedestrian refuges. I used to think much like you, then I had to get around on crutches for a while, and it sucked. That gave me a new appreciation for the difficulties the elderly and infirm have, and having kids, just try crossing a 40mph road like you describe with two little ones in tow.

As a cyclist I hate pedestrian refuges, but I also recognise that they are very important to pedestrians.
BUT as I described all it would take is a solid line and the cycle lane to continue and a sign stating cylcles have the right of way. By stopping the cycle lane what message are they giving to motorists?

Mistake number 2 is a classic. A little while ago I was overtaken very close in heavy traffic. Out of instinct, I shouted "Woah, you knob!". Turned out he had his window open and had heard me.

He sat there in his Volvo hurling abuse, ending with a threat to "rip my face off" (his words, not mine). I just cheerily said "Well that's a great attitude isn't it ^_^" and he drove off in a rage.

Season of the Toruist my friend, they either drive like they do at home or drive at 15mp looking at the view getting everyone elses backs up so they drive like nutters

i find the ones to be wary of are the ones with W* 00 XYZ as the registration format. especially the ones that are over 60 !

ok so what does that mean to someone who ignores number plates  I'm pretty sure thats not a year but thats about all my knowledge

any thing from WA to WZ with the first part is from the westcountry. where driving rules seem to be whatever the driver wants them to be.

Interesting bit on R4 Woman’s Hour yesterday about how some men in particular equate their skill at driving to their skill in bed – how “admitting” you’re a poor driver is basically admitting your rubbish in the sack – we all think “we’re above average” at both etc...

God no! I cycle like I make love - making the most of flabby ballast and gravity!

Umm... that made more sense in my head...

still blokes around that won;t stand for being told to fark of or being called a daffodil

people need to accept that they aren't words to be thrown around with impunity

I've broadly stopped doing it after various episodes
