I purposely went down a "quiet" route home this afternoon after letting the mother in laws dog out for a toilet break...only one parked car parked in the street and I suppose I could have taken a stronger primary but didn't due to the 90 degree corner 20 metres further down the road and naively thought the car behind would wait. Car passed about a foot away from me and was then too fast for the corner narrowly missing another car coming round the other way! Classic case of frustration nearly causing a silly and completely avoidable accident. All that would have been gained is seconds!!

Interesting bit on R4 Woman’s Hour yesterday about how some men in particular equate their skill at driving to their skill in bed – how “admitting” you’re a poor driver is basically admitting your rubbish in the sack – we all think “we’re above average” at both etc... I don’t necessarily agree with that myself (what with me being a fantastic driver but rubbish in bed – only joking) - but in all a seriousness for some men if you insult or criticise their driving you’re essentially having a go at their manliness, which might explain why the bigots usually resort to any complaint about a dangerous close pass by hurling homophobic abuse. Had it myself a few times – all rather Neanderthal.
Plod should at least take the racism seriously – I’m sure they have a duty ro at least record such incidents?

It's really all my own fault. I had another shouting match with a woman driver last year at the exact same point, and said to myself that I would always take a strong position through there from now on, and obviously promptly forgot.

These little islands in the middle of the road are just stupid and dangerous.

It isn't your fault. BTW, pedestrian refuges are a good thing.

In between here and there
pedestrian refuges are a good thing.
Really? I think they are really dangerous and normally placed somewhere that you never see any pedestrians! On some sections they are every 100 feet plus at least two sets of lights and a zebra all within 1 mile. The Cycle Lane stops and re-starts before and after. My arguement is that the Cycle Lane should carry on and the line should change from broken to solid lines giving the Cyclist "permssion" to be there and be there alone.

Drivers seem to think that they can just come right across and close pass at these pinch points and it takes a brave rider to hold primary in fast 40mph moving traffic.

Nearly all my real close passes come at these pedistrian pinch points, and the worse ones are when I am trying to hold a good primary through them, I have given up with primary and rely on a constant shoulder check approaching them in the vain hope the driver coming up will realise how tight it is going to be and will be aware fo me looking..

Back to the OP, yet another clear case of a bully. Since taking up cycling whenever I drive now I am far more relaxed and far more aware of how un-relaxed the rest of the road users are, prepared to break laws and cause stress on everyone to gain one 15ft car space advantage, it is f'ing crazy what people will do to gain perhaps 20 seconds on their journey.

Commute home turned into a bit of a nightmare this evening. Riding down here

https://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=aylestone avenue&hl=en&ll=51.538381,-0.214684&spn=0.010103,0.01929&client=firefox-a&hnear=Aylestone Ave, London NW6 7AA, United Kingdom&t=m&z=16&layer=c&cbll=51.538462,-0.214582&panoid=cDG496_C4gFzLlMGjg6R0A&cbp=12,34.52,,1,6.29

I heard a small car engine revving quite high coming up behind me getting closer and closer as I was getting to the pinch point, not primary, which was my number 1 mistake, Of course he came past at 30mph 6 inches away from my elbow. "F*** off," I shouted (being my number 2 mistake), whereupon he skidded to a halt and stopped turned into the road I was going to turn into, and opened the door. I pulled up and got off, realising my third mistake when he turned out to be enormous (I'm 6'4" and 15 stone, and he was taller and had three stone on me at least).

Turns out he is a guy who gets very upset when people tell him to f*** off, and when I told him that it was frightening to be passed at 30mph by a 1 tonne car 6 inches from you, his reply, with a lot of swearing, was that I shouldn't be frightened, I'm a grown man. He was extraordinarily agressive, and it degenerated into him saying he wished he'd knocked me off, the next time he saw me he'd **** me up etc.. There was a lot of racist stuff, too, all about "my sort", how racist I was, about how in 5 years all my women would be slaves, etc.. I told him he was just nasty.

I think the only thing that stopped it turning into a very one sided fight was that a very nice woman who'd seen the entire thing stopped and was being an obvious witness to anything that happened. He was also very nasty to her and her young son in the car, reversing back up the road to shout at her through the window when I thought it was over and had gone to thank her for stopping. At that point I got my phone out to call the police (which I only eventually did when I got home), took a photo of him and his car, and he eventually left.

Anyway, if anyone spots a silver Fiat Punto reg: W32 VEU when out and about, avoid it like the plague. The driver is an absolute nut-case.

but you did tell him to f**k off

Good for pedestrians. Lots more pedestrians are killed than cyclists, despite them spending far less time on the roads.

I was about to say the same thing! Ive not had any close passes in my 6 weeks of commuting in cornwall untill today! I failed to give way, 3 really close passes (2 caravans as well!)

Season of the idiot I think!

That doesn't mean anything without normalising the figures first to take into account total numbers, total distance travelled, total exposure time etc.

If you look at risk per billion kilometers travelled, for example, then risk to pedestrians and cyclists is roughly equal.

Loco, if you're not a relatively fit male of young-middle age, then it can be a lot harder to cross a road like that without numerous pedestrian refuges. I used to think much like you, then I had to get around on crutches for a while, and it sucked. That gave me a new appreciation for the difficulties the elderly and infirm have, and having kids, just try crossing a 40mph road like you describe with two little ones in tow.

As a cyclist I hate pedestrian refuges, but I also recognise that they are very important to pedestrians.
