Nearly Got Run Over by an Effin Bike!!

Was what the charming young lady said just after I passed her last night. More on the incident later, but that outburst made me wonder ..

We've all seen the comments on places like Have Your Say or just about any newspapers website along the lines of "cyclists are a menace: they all RLJ / ride on the path / wobble along the road and get in the way / don't respect the laws of the road / eat small fluffy kittens for breakfast. AND they don't pay road tax". If challenged, the person with the aforementioned views nearly always resorts to the "well, everybody I know has had a near miss with a bike".

So we all know there are muppets riding bikes that do stupid things, same as with any other kind of vehicle .. but this incident did make me wonder how many "near misses" are genuine. Read on ..

On the way home last night, through a biggish estate (few hundred houses) going along the main arterial road that bisects the estate. It's quite wide, with a footpath either side and a few metres of grass between each path and the road. I was in the road, in secondary, well lit up (two lights on the front, two at the back, bright yellow jacket, all of that) doing approx 15 mph (it's a little bit uphill), no cars about.

A group of "yoofs" emerged from an alley ahead to my left, led by a young lady. They were heading towards the road obviously going to cross it. The young lady at the front was using that look-at-me-I'm-so-cool-I-can-cross-the-road-really-slowly-in-front-of-a-vehicle swagger you sometimes see so that's one potential hazard negated.

BUT, she was holding a mobile phone or iPod in her hand (I could see the glow from the screen) and was clearly only paying attention to that. Uh-oh! So I checked over my shoulder and moved a metre or so out towards the middle of the road.

Then, she turned round to her mates and held up said device to show them something whilst now walking backwards towards the road. UH-OH!! Another check and move out pretty much to the white line, slow down a bit (nearly at the top of the hill) and cover the brakes.

When she was a foot or so away from the kerb, she turned back round, saw me and stopped abruptly. So that was it, no problem, nothing .. even had she stepped into the road I was a whole width of the lane away from her and ready to stop.

But, as I accelerated off into the darkness I heard her say to her mates, "Didja see THAT? I nearly got run over by that F****** BIKE" the last couple of words shouted much louder, clearly for my benefit. Her tone of voice suggested that she felt I'd wronged her in some way, rather than it being a "look at me, I'm so random, wacky, crazy and mad that I nearly stepped into the road without looking and got run over" kind of joke with her mates.

So, sorry, a long story with no harm done, but it did make me wonder about some of these "everyone I know has had a near miss with a bike" stories.

That was my first thought - especially on this particular estate!! - but then I got to wondering. I've seen similar situations involving all age ranges and some people will be contrite and apologetic but others come over all, "you neary ran me down".

And my current hypothesis is that it's that second group who are the source of some of the "everyone I know has had a near miss with a bike". It's the kind of story that might grow in the telling .. OK, maybe this isn't a great example of that kind of story, but you get the idea: "the bike came out of nowhere going 100 mph and was on the path and then bounced onto the road".

Sounds like you did everything right there, LC - good work.
Cheers JtM .. it's a case of self preservation really. She wasn't a small young lady!!

I'm sorry, I would have gone back and run her over.

I wouldn't be surprised about tales expanding to meet the limitations in people's brains. I frequently pass pedestrians who go to step off the kerb before looking right and then look round in wild terror ( a bit like Bambi's mother did) as they realise that just because they couldn't hear an engine, it doesn't mean there's nothing coming.

Almost identical to by 'Little Ms Sunshine' vid by the sounds of things.

Its surprising how the out-group nature of cycling even filters down to the pond-life who've never picked up a Daily Mail in their lives.

It's interesting isn't it? Is it restricted to just one paper though?

I'd been reading the "East Coast Magnatom" thread the other day and looked through the usual crop of comments on the article in whichever paper it was. I think it was that - coupled with her shout of course - which got me wondering about how she'd perceived the incident .. to me, it was clear cut: her actions had endangered her (and me!!) but I'd taken all necessary precautions to alleviate the danger, a point which was obviously lost on her.

In the end, of course, she didn't step off the kerb, but ..

I think its just another sign of the blameless, selfish, society that we live in - I posted on her a couple of days ago because a girl stepped out in front of me from between parked cars and all I did was shouted "watch it" to stop her so I didn't hit her - got a mouthful of abuse for my troubles!

Then last nigth coming up Colmore Row - really busy bus/car area for anyone who knows it in Birmingham - a bloke just walked out in front of me in the exact same way - I had to brake and shout "watch it" to him a lot louder this time because it was a case of hear me or I hit you - daft twonk never said a word nothing! Just carried on!

I, on the other hand had to say something - "oh don't worry, no trouble, don't say sorry or anything, just be on your way!" - in front of the office population of Birmingham it seemed - said population found it v.amusing!!!

Agreed, and I don't think we can or should do anything different. I just now have this image of some of these people reading one of those newspaper stories about "new cycling initiative" or whatever and thinking to themselves, "oh yeah, one of them nearly knocked me over the other night .. I'll show THEM".

Had a similar one going past Harrow College the other week. A bus load of students get off a bus on the other side of the road and I'm coming down the hill doing about 35 mph. I start to slow down to make sure everybody is aware of me being there. Anyway most of the students saw me and stopped/slowed until I had passed (there were cars right behind me also) apart rom one dim b*tch who, after looking straight into my eyes, kept walking! By this time I had slowed down to about 10 mph. Her friend grabbed her by the arm which is probably what stopped the collision. I let out a surprised "fackin' 'ell" as I got a bit of a fright, it wasn't actually out of anger or aimed at her. As I was getting back up to speed I could hear her mouthing off. I couldn't understand why she hadn't just stopped!
