Decided to fit my new brakes today, so out came the dust sheet, stand and tools, clamps up the roadie and ready to roll.
Disconnected the the front brake then the rear, lo and behold the rear cable sheared all but one strand at the clamp.
Wow I thought, that coulda been out on the road and that happened!

Anyway, knowing I had a spare - albeit cheap- rear cable, I cut the old one at the top tube then went to take it out at the lever, and the swivel barrel fell apart... then the inner stranded somewhere under the bar tape... then I realised I was pulling out the front cable!! - the whole thing jammed inside the flexi bit under the tape.

Lets just say that a few colourful choice words were used.

Thankfully I was able to use he remainder of the rear cable for the front and the new cable on the rear, and over 3.5 hours later I eventually re-fitted both levers, bar tape and had the roadie out for a test.

Just goes to show, you need to be prepared for things to go t*ts up.

Pretty much standard with most jobs, unless you carry a stock of spares at home.

I have a series of recumbents that use long (tandem) cables. I have always cut down the used cables and kept them as spares
