I like the old Dr & cop films when they had bells that went. Brrrrrrrriiinnnngggggg Brrrrrrrrrriiiinnnnggggg

Sorry to be the boring one. All of them.

"Wail" is the long, lengthy "wooooooooo... woooooooooo"

This can be changed to a more urgent, rapid 'yelp' - "wah wah wah wah" as you approach obstructions, junctions etc.

You also have "French horns" - "nee nah nee nah", for a different tone again. Best when travelling in a group so traffic hear (hopefully) a different car.

Others exist as well - I've heard some work white noise, some with even more rapid 'strobe like' sirens. But theres no one answer!

I like that German one, that has started appearing on some emergency vehicles around here. Mind you, it probably produces emissions far above those claimed so could well be banned in the near future.

Round here Trumpton tend to default to the traditional "nee-nar" if they're rushing to rescue a cat. Up until a few years ago they used to have incredibly loud air horns on the fire engines to supplement the sirens and they really did shift the traffic, but they seem to have done away with them now.

We had to go to Nee-Nar in the 70's, before that, just a regular siren for all that,

By the Way, these

The ambulances here have a dirty nee-naa, that is there is some white noise under the main tone which make them really easy to locate when you can't see them.
A few years ago the Fire Engines experemented with nee-naa-pffffft, the normal siren interrpersed with bursts of white noise, 'orrible.
