There was someone on the radio the other day, unemployed, saying she'd do any job "even cleaning", but then said that all the cleaning jobs required experience. I felt it sound like she felt cleaning was below her, and yet she lacked the required skills, so in some way, it was above her in some ways.

Obviously, some skills are easier and quicker to pick up than others, but every job needs some skill, plus the ability to turn up on time and stick it out.

One of the cleaning supervisors where I was for a bit explained that they asked for experience because in their experience the drop out rate was lower for those with even a couple of months of experience (for a variety of reasons) and they were in theory less corruptible by other members of staff into taking short cuts/training a second time was more likely to go in. It wasn't necessarily some nonsense dictated to them from above - every single one of them had previously been in the same job for years before getting promoted. They were reasonably honest about it though and said that experience certainly wasn't an infallible guide to these things and they they might also get an indication of this in the interview process (which was quite lengthy).

If you're looking for full time hours and day time hours though I can understand the frustration - where I was unless you had lots of experience you had a very tiny chance of getting full time hours and in the day. Nearly everyone started off on 15-20 hours in the evenings and then a few lucky ones migrated across. There used to be a lot of complaints about students taking the jobs and freezing other people out of employment.

I am struggling to think of a worse job than that.

I think you'll find the " solid waste orifice cleaner" role is a little worse although it does come with a uniform.

Well I say uniform, it' actually just a pair of rubber gauntlets that come all the way up to your armpits ad a clothes peg for your nose!

The worst job I ever had was when I was the apprentice tea-boy's part-time assistant. Very unfulfilling, that was.

I'd probably take it if it involved cleaning between the toes..? Shame that the job description seems so inadequate.

Equally rewarding of course is collecting 'foot parmesan' with a pumice stone (or a blunt grater) from the soles of the feet. I find my own works really well with Bolognese sauce.
