My chain needs replacing so I have a new Shimano HG40 chain.

I noticed that the new chain has a black pin on the end of the chain, what is this for, do I have to use it?

IIRC, Shimano has a specific pin to make the new joint...you can buy them seperately. This will be that pin.

That's what I thought after reading the PArk Tool guide. It says "The 7 and 8 speed chains use a black connecting rivet" but it looks like a normal rivet, just black rather than one shown in the photo.

that's right - it wont' look likethose pins - they are longer with a slightly smaller diamer pointy bit - that is to locate the pin in the loink - the chain you have already has that done. you would then break off the pointy bit.

with your chain, just press in with a chain tool and job done.
