need help understanding battery technology

Does anyone know of a concise and understandable faq or guide to battery technology?

I'm trying to get my head around the different types of battery (std alkaline, different rechargables, etc), their best uses and operating conditions, and which gadgets are best suited to which type of battery etc etc etc. So something that explains (simply) voltage, rates of discharge, etc etc etc.
